Henry Shelton Sanford (1823 - 1891)
Sanford became interested in Florida during a yachting trip in the early 1870s. After purchasing 20,000 acres of land, Henry Sanford established the town of Sanford, the Sanford store, built a wharf on Lake Monroe to accommodate the St. Johns River steamers, built Sanford House hotel and established orange groves, first at Sanford then later at Belleair, three miles northwest. He helped establish the Florida orange growing industry by importing thousands of citrus trees of every known variety.
